Vijf jaar geleden op 12 juni 2003 overleed de Amerikaanse acteur Gregory Peck (1916 – 2003).

Gregory Peck studeerde medicijnen aan Berkeley, maar koos uiteindelijk toch voor een acteercarrière. Aan het begin zat het hem niet mee, maar zijn acteertalent werd tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog erg gewaardeerd: door rugletsel hoefde hij namelijk niet het leger in.

Voor ‘Days of Glory’ (1944),  de eerste film waarin Peck speelde, ontving hij direct een Oscarnominatie voor Beste Acteur. Hierna volgden nog meer nominaties. Een aantal van Pecks bekendste films zijn: ‘Roman Holiday’ (samen met Audrey Hepburn, 1953), ‘Moby Dick’ (1956) en ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ (1962).  Er wordt gezegd dat deze laatste film zijn favoriet was.

In 1989 kreeg hij een Lifetime Achievement Award van het Amerikaanse Film Instituut (AFI) én de hoogste Amerikaanse kunstonderscheiding, de National Medal of Arts.

Op 12 juni 2003 overleed hij op 87-jarige leeftijd.
